What is grey water?

The waste water from your showers, baths, hand basins, laundry tubs and washing machines is known as grey water. Unlike water from your toilet (known as black water), grey water can be collected and used to water your garden. There are various grey water systems available.

If you’re building a new house, plumbing provisions can be installed during construction to allow for grey water to be collected separately and a full grey water system installed at a later date.

A whole house grey water system will collect the grey water from the bathrooms and laundry. Grey water provisions need to be plumbed into the house at construction stage. Using gravity the waste water flows into the system and passes through a filter to remove any hair or lint from the greywater. This is then pumped out to a drip irrigation system in the garden.

Laundry only grey water system

This system does not require dual plumbing and sits above the ground on the wall outside the laundry. Water is pumped from the washing machine, filtered through the system and diverted to irrigate the garden through a drip system.

This is a great system for existing houses where no plumbing provisions have been installed during construction.

It is also a cost effective option and will effectively water a garden area of less than 40sqm.
